Topical Acne Treatment for Adolescent Males

Primary Considerations

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends adapalene 0.1% gel as a treatment option for acne in patients aged 12 years and older, as it has established safety and effectiveness in this age group 1
  • Clindamycin-containing products have not established safety and effectiveness in children under 12 years, and their use should be avoided in this age group unless specifically directed 1, 2
  • Tretinoin safety has not been established in children under 10 years, although it may be considered for use in 12-year-old males 2

Safety Precautions

  • Patients using adapalene and benzoyl peroxide should minimize sun exposure due to increased photosensitivity 1
  • The American Academy of Dermatology advises against using multiple topical acne medications simultaneously without guidance, as this can compound irritation 1
