Safe Co-Administration of Levetiracetam and Valproic Acid

Clinical Considerations

  • The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that both levetiracetam and valproic acid are classified as non-enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs, making them preferable options when avoiding drug interactions is important 1, 2

Monitoring Considerations

  • Patients on valproic acid should be monitored for valproic acid-specific adverse effects, including thrombocytopenia and hepatotoxicity, which require regular monitoring, as suggested by clinical guidelines 3
  • The American Academy of Neuropsychopharmacology suggests that patients on levetiracetam and valproic acid should be monitored for potential side effects, but chronic administration of either medication does not result in clinically meaningful driving impairment 4, 5

Special Population Considerations

  • In patients with brain tumors receiving chemotherapy, levetiracetam is generally better tolerated than valproic acid due to lower risk of hematologic toxicities, according to Praxis Medical Insights 3
