Dosing of Olmesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide

Available Presentations and Dosage

  • The combination of olmesartan medoxomil-hydrochlorothiazide is available in three presentations: 20/12.5 mg, 40/12.5 mg, and 40/25 mg 1, 2, 3

Considerations of Safety

  • The maximum dose of hydrochlorothiazide (25 mg) should be used with caution due to the increased risk of metabolic adverse effects 3
  • Higher doses of hydrochlorothiazide (>25 mg) do not provide significant additional antihypertensive benefit but increase the risk of hypokalemia and other adverse effects 3
  • Serum electrolytes, especially potassium, should be monitored in patients receiving the combination at the maximum dose 3

Special Populations

  • In patients with renal insufficiency, it may be necessary to adjust the dose or consider alternative therapeutic options 4
  • The combination is contraindicated during pregnancy due to the risk of fetal harm 5
