Characterization and Management of Indeterminate Renal Cystic Lesions

Diagnostic Approach

  • The American College of Radiology recommends MRI for further characterization of indeterminate renal masses, with higher specificity (68.1%) than CT (27.7%) for distinguishing between different types of kidney masses 1, 3
  • MRI is particularly useful for renal lesions because it can better characterize small cysts under 1.5 cm, detect subtle enhancement (blood flow) that might indicate cancer, and provide detailed information about the internal structure of cystic lesions 1, 2

Next Steps and Follow-up

  • Follow-up MRI is the most appropriate next step for an indeterminate kidney lesion, as it will help determine if the lesion is a simple cyst, a complex cyst, or a solid mass 1, 4
  • The American College of Radiology recommends MRI for further characterization of indeterminate renal masses, which is essential for guiding treatment decisions 4, 5
