Concurrent Use of Glycolic Acid 7% and Tretinoin

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying glycolic acid 7% in the morning and tretinoin in the evening to optimize tolerance, and using a gentle, non-medicated cleanser between applications 1, 2
  • The American Academy of Dermatology suggests applying broad-spectrum sunscreen during daytime use, as both agents increase photosensitivity 2

Critical Contraindications and Precautions

  • The American Academy of Dermatology advises against using glycolic acid peels (higher concentrations 20-70%) if the patient is on isotretinoin therapy within the last 6 months, but notes this contraindication does not apply to the 7% home-use solution 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Relative contraindications for higher concentration glycolic acid include active retinoid dermatitis, active infection or open wounds, and history of abnormal scar formation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology 3, 4, 5, 6

Common Side Effects to Monitor

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends monitoring for dry skin, peeling, scaling, and flaking, as well as erythema and burning sensation, when using glycolic acid 7% and tretinoin 1, 2

Enhancing Tolerance

  • The American Academy of Dermatology suggests avoiding other keratolytic agents or photosensitizing agents during the adjustment period, and minimizing exposure to environmental extremes, to enhance skin tolerance and patient comfort 2
