Dosing and Administration

• The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends an initial dosage of 125 mg twice daily for mood stabilization, with titration to therapeutic blood level (40-90 μg/mL) 1
• For status epilepticus, a loading dose of 20-30 mg/kg IV is recommended, with efficacy in 63-88% of patients 2, 3

Monitoring and Safety

• The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends monitoring liver enzyme levels, platelets, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time as indicated 1
• Regular monitoring of liver enzyme levels is recommended 1
• Complete blood count, especially platelets, should be monitored 1
• Prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time should be monitored as indicated 1
