Immunization and Preventive Screening Recommendations for 6‑Year‑Old Children

Immunizations

  • Review immunization status and provide any catch‑up vaccines needed to complete the routine childhood series – the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that clinicians verify the record and administer missing doses of DTaP, IPV, MMR, varicella, etc., during the 4‑6 year visit. 3
  • Administer an annual influenza vaccine to all children ≥ 6 months of age – the AAP advises yearly inactivated influenza vaccination for this age group, regardless of health status. 5
  • Ensure completion of the hepatitis B series (3 doses) and hepatitis A series (2 doses) – the CDC’s MMWR recommendations state that the full hepatitis B series should be finished in childhood and that hepatitis A vaccination should be completed with two doses. 6

Targeted Laboratory Screening

  • Lipid screening should be performed only when there is a family history of early cardiovascular disease or hyperlipidemia – selective screening is advised for children with such risk factors. 1
  • Hemoglobin/hematocrit testing may be considered for children with dietary risk factors for anemia – clinicians can order a CBC when nutritional concerns or other anemia risk factors are present. 1

Visit Structure and Preventive Care

  • Do not substitute a comprehensive well‑child visit with an abbreviated “sports physical.” – using a limited sports exam instead of a full preventive visit can miss opportunities for immunization updates, anticipatory guidance, and other essential screenings. 8
