Avoiding Misinterpretation of Psychosocial Reactions as Biological Illness

Guideline Recommendation

  • Clinicians should not attribute behavioral or emotional reactions that stem from psychosocial stressors to an underlying biological illness, as this may lead to unnecessary medical interventions and overlook needed psychosocial support. 3

Clinical Example

  • In a child who is recovering from depression and is experiencing irritability due to academic challenges, the primary intervention should focus on psychosocial strategies (e.g., counseling, academic accommodations) rather than adjusting psychiatric medication. 3
