Mycoplasma Pneumonia Diagnosis and Treatment
Clinical Presentation
- The American Thoracic Society suggests that Mycoplasma pneumonia typically presents with fever, arthralgia, headache, cough, and crackles, especially in school-aged children, and requires macrolide antibiotics as first-line treatment 1, 2
- Fever is a common symptom, typically greater than 38.5°C 1, 2
- Headache and arthralgia are also common symptoms 2, 3
- Chest pain and abdominal pain can occur in older children 1
- Crackles on auscultation and wheeze in approximately 30% of cases are physical examination findings 1, 2, 3
Diagnostic Approach
- The European Respiratory Society suggests suspecting Mycoplasma pneumonia in school-aged children with fever, arthralgia, headache, cough, and crackles 2, 3
Treatment
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends macrolide antibiotics as the first-line treatment for Mycoplasma pneumonia 5
- Antipyretics and analgesics can be used to keep the child comfortable and to help with coughing, and oxygen therapy should be provided if oxygen saturation is 92% or less 5
- Ensure adequate hydration and provide follow-up care if the child is deteriorating or not improving after 48 hours on treatment 5
Prevention
- Standard respiratory hygiene practices are recommended to prevent the spread of Mycoplasma pneumonia 5
