Aripiprazole Dose Reduction Guidelines

Tapering Recommendations

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as reported by MMWR Recommendations and Reports, recommends a gradual taper of approximately 10% of the original dose per week to minimize withdrawal symptoms when discontinuing or reducing Aripiprazole 1
  • Slower tapers, such as 10% per month, may be better tolerated than more rapid tapers, particularly for patients who have been taking Aripiprazole for longer durations, according to MMWR Recommendations and Reports 1

Monitoring During Dose Reduction

  • Regular assessment for withdrawal symptoms, which may include anxiety, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes, is necessary during the dose reduction process, as stated by MMWR Recommendations and Reports 1
  • If withdrawal symptoms occur, the taper may need to be paused and restarted when the patient is ready, as recommended by MMWR Recommendations and Reports 1
  • Patients should be reassessed at least every 3 months during the dose reduction process, according to MMWR Recommendations and Reports 1

Special Considerations

  • For patients with difficulty swallowing, the oral solution formulation may be more appropriate for precise dose reductions, as suggested by Praxis Medical Insights 2
