Treatment of Avulsion Fracture of the Volar Aspect of the 5th Proximal Interphalangeal Joint
Initial Assessment and Imaging
- Radiography with at least 3 views (posteroanterior, lateral, and oblique) is the initial imaging modality of choice for suspected fractures of the hand, as recommended by the American College of Radiology 1
- CT may be considered if initial radiographs are equivocal but there is high clinical suspicion for fracture, according to the American College of Radiology 1
- MRI can be useful for evaluating associated soft tissue injuries, particularly for assessing the integrity of the volar plate and collateral ligaments, as suggested by the American College of Radiology 2
Treatment Algorithm
- For unstable fracture-dislocations, surgical intervention should be considered when there is joint instability, significant displacement, or when conservative treatment fails to provide adequate pain relief and functional recovery, as recommended by the European League Against Rheumatism 3
Follow-up and Rehabilitation
- Long-term follow-up should be adapted to the patient's individual needs based on symptoms and recovery progress, according to the European League Against Rheumatism 3
