Sunscreen Ingredients Safety

Safety Profile of Sunscreen Ingredients

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF ≥15 for patients without special risk factors 4, 5
  • Skin irritation is more common than true allergic reactions, with the two most commonly reported allergens being Benzophenon-3 and Dibenzoylmethane 1, 2, 3
  • Para-Aminobenzoesäure (PABA) is rarely used today, having been the most common allergen in the past 1, 2, 3
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends applying sunscreen about 30 minutes before sun exposure, using about 30 ml (a handful) to cover the entire body, and reapplying after swimming or strenuous exercise 4
  • The International Agency for Research on Cancer has found that topical application of sunscreen is likely to prevent squamous cell carcinoma of the skin 1, 3, 5

Important Warnings

  • Patients who experience side effects from certain ingredients should pay attention to the ingredients and try sunscreens with different ingredients 1, 2, 3
  • Sunscreen should be used as a complementary measure, with methods like sun avoidance, seeking shade, and wearing protective clothing as the first line of defense against UV radiation 1, 2, 3, 5

Clinical Benefits Outweigh Risks

  • Clinical studies have shown that sunscreens reduce the incidence of actinic keratoses, precursors to squamous cell carcinomas 1, 3
  • A randomized clinical trial showed that sunscreens reduce squamous cell carcinomas themselves 1, 3
  • In children with high melanoma risk, sunscreens reduce moles, which are precursors and the strongest risk factor for melanomas 1, 3
