Bupropion for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Evidence Assessment

  • The American College of Physicians recommends cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as a first-line option for GAD, according to the Annals of Internal Medicine 1, 4
  • The treatment decision algorithm suggests switching to a different SSRI/SNRI as a second-line option for GAD, as recommended by the Annals of Internal Medicine 1

Treatment Decision Algorithm

  • Bupropion should only be considered for GAD if the patient has failed multiple first and second-line treatments, has comorbid depression responsive to bupropion, or cannot tolerate sexual side effects or weight gain from other medications, as suggested by the Annals of Internal Medicine 1
