Hepatitis B Vaccination Recommendations for Adolescents (Aged 11‑19)

Standard Pediatric/Adolescent Vaccine Schedule

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends a three‑dose series for all adolescents 11‑19 years old using the pediatric formulations:

Inappropriate Schedules for a 17‑Year‑Old

The 2‑dose schedule of Recombivax HB adult formulation (10 µg, 0 & 4‑6 months) is licensed only for ages 11‑15 and therefore should *not* be used in a 17‑year‑old. [1][2]
If an individual turns 16 before receiving the second dose of a 2‑dose series, ACIP advises switching to the 3‑dose pediatric series. [1][2]

Vaccines approved for adults (≥ 18 years) that are *not* indicated for a 17‑year‑old include:

Alternative Extended‑Interval Schedule

When the standard 0‑1‑6 month schedule is impractical, ACIP permits an extended‑interval series (0, 12, 24 months). This schedule:
