Quetiapine Stat Dosing Guidelines

Dosing Considerations

  • The maximum dose of quetiapine for immediate administration is 750 mg/day, which can be administered as a single dose or divided doses, with caution exercised due to potential side effects such as orthostatic hypotension and sedation 1
  • For acute administration, the medication should be initiated at a lower dose and titrated upward based on clinical response and tolerability 1

Administration and Monitoring

  • Monitor for orthostatic hypotension, especially during initial dose titration 2
  • Administration on an empty stomach is advised to maximize effectiveness 3
  • Quetiapine is not recommended during pregnancy or nursing 3

Important Cautions

  • Exercise caution if signs/symptoms of depression, compromised respiratory function, or hepatic heart failure are present 3
  • Additive effects on psychomotor performance may occur with concomitant CNS depressants and/or alcohol use 3
  • Rapid dose decrease or abrupt discontinuation can produce withdrawal symptoms 3

Clinical Context for Stat Dosing

  • For management of acute agitation or psychosis, lower initial doses with careful monitoring are recommended 1
  • In delirium management, quetiapine can be administered at 25-50 mg stat, with caution in elderly patients 1
