Vision, Hearing, and Developmental Assessment in 2-Month-Old Infants

Vision Assessment

  • The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends red reflex testing to detect abnormalities of the ocular media, external inspection of ocular and periocular structures, pupillary examination, and assessment of fixation and following behavior in 2-month-old infants 1
  • Parental observations regarding the quality of the child's vision and eye alignment are important, as poor eye contact after 8 weeks warrants further assessment, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1

Developmental Assessment

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends assessing motor development, including the ability to lift head and chest when in prone position, and social interaction, including eye contact and social smiling, in 2-month-old infants 2
  • Developmental surveillance should be performed at every visit, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, to identify potential developmental delays 2

Screenings

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reviewing metabolic/newborn screening results, if not done previously, to ensure timely identification of potential health issues in 2-month-old infants 3
  • Assessment for risk factors that might warrant additional screening, such as family history of eye problems or genetic conditions, is recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
