Cetirizine Dosage and Safety for Pediatric Patients

Introduction to Cetirizine

  • The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends a cetirizine dose of 5 mg once daily for a 4-year-old child weighing 45 pounds, with a safety profile comparable to placebo 1

Dosage and Administration

  • For children, cetirizine may cause mild drowsiness in approximately 13.7% of patients compared to 6.3% with placebo, and unlike some other second-generation antihistamines, cetirizine has been associated with some sedative properties even at recommended doses 1
  • If drowsiness occurs, consider administering the cetirizine dose in the evening, as suggested by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology 2

Safety and Monitoring

  • The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology notes that cetirizine is generally well-tolerated in children, with the most common side effects including headache, pharyngitis, and abdominal pain, and drowsiness may occur in some children taking cetirizine, though it tends to be milder than with first-generation antihistamines 1, 2
  • Observe for potential side effects, particularly drowsiness or sedation, during cetirizine therapy, as recommended by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology 1, 2
