Ranitidine Alternatives and Historical Prescribing Information

Pediatric Dosing and Efficacy

  • In pediatric patients with gastric hypersecretion in short bowel syndrome, ranitidine demonstrated 7 times more potency than cimetidine with longer duration of action, and was effective at a dose of 10-15 mg/kg/day via continuous infusion 1, 2

Anaphylaxis Treatment

  • For adults with anaphylaxis, ranitidine can be used as adjunctive therapy at a dose of 50 mg IV diluted in 5% dextrose over 5 minutes 3
  • For children with anaphylaxis, ranitidine can be used as adjunctive therapy at a dose of 12.5-50 mg (1 mg/kg) IV over 5 minutes 3
  • Post-discharge, ranitidine can be continued at a dose of twice daily for 2-3 days, with a maximum dose of 75-150 mg 4

Drug Interactions and Safety

  • Ranitidine has minimal drug interaction potential compared to cimetidine, and does not inhibit hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes 5

Alternative Therapies

  • The American Gastroenterological Association recommends prescribing alternative acid suppression therapy, such as proton pump inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole 20 mg daily, pantoprazole 40 mg daily) or other H2 antagonists (e.g. famotidine 20 mg twice daily, nizatidine 150 mg twice daily) 5
