Genu Recurvatum Treatment

Treatment Overview

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends initiating treatment with conservative management for mild to moderate cases, including exercises to strengthen quadriceps muscles to improve knee alignment and function, and customized orthotics to improve distal alignment in feet and ankles 1
  • The American College of Surgeons suggests considering surgical intervention when deformity persists despite optimized medical treatment for at least 12 months, or when symptoms interfere with function, or when there is mechanical axis deviation (Zone 2 or greater) 2

Surgical Treatment

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends guided growth techniques, which should be performed at least 2-3 years before skeletal maturity (14 years in girls, 16 years in boys), for patients with growth potential 1, 2

Post-Surgical Follow-Up

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends regular clinical and functional evaluations after surgery, with radiographic evaluation at 12 months after surgery, or sooner if deformity worsens, and continued intermittent evaluations until skeletal maturity 2
  • Functional evaluation should be performed using standardized tools such as the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) 2
