Management of Cutaneous Reactions to Prozac

Treatment Approach

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying moderate-potency topical corticosteroids to affected areas, using non-sedating antihistamines for daytime, and considering sedating antihistamines for nighttime pruritus, as well as applying emollients at least once daily to prevent skin dryness 1
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as reported in MMWR Recommendations and Reports, advises against using prophylactic corticosteroids or antihistamines when initiating SSRI therapy, as this has not proven effective and may mask early warning signs 2

Patient Care

  • Patients should avoid hot showers and excessive soap use, which can worsen skin irritation 1
