Hives After Abrupt Discontinuation of Quetiapine

Risk Factors for Withdrawal Symptoms

  • A previous history of medication sensitivity or withdrawal reactions may predispose patients to experiencing hives after quetiapine discontinuation, according to the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 1

Management of Hives After Quetiapine Discontinuation

  • The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends evaluating the severity of hives based on extent: mild (less than 3 hives), moderate (3-10 hives), or severe (generalized involvement) 2
  • For mild to moderate hives, treatment with a non-sedating H1 antihistamine such as cetirizine, desloratadine, fexofenadine, levocetirizine, or loratadine is recommended 2
  • Applying cooling antipruritic lotions such as calamine or 1% menthol in aqueous cream can provide symptomatic relief 2
  • Patients should be advised to avoid potential aggravating factors such as overheating, stress, and alcohol 2
  • In severe cases with systemic symptoms beyond hives, emergency medical attention may be required, as suggested by the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 1
  • Consultation with a specialist (allergist or dermatologist) may be beneficial for persistent or severe cases, according to the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 1

Special Populations

  • Patients with a history of allergic reactions to other medications may be at higher risk for developing hives after quetiapine discontinuation, as noted by the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 1
