Post-Treatment Surveillance and Management of Colon Cancer
Surveillance Protocols
- The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends post-treatment surveillance of colon cancer patients, which includes regular clinical examinations, CEA testing, and colonoscopy to monitor for recurrence 1, 2
- For patients with T2 or greater lesions, CEA testing is recommended at baseline and every 3 months for 2 years, then every 6 months for years 2-5, as per NCCN guidelines 1
- Colonoscopy is indicated within 1 year of resection (or 3-6 months postoperatively) and repeated annually if neoplastic polyps are found, according to NCCN guidelines 1
Treatment Guidelines
- The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines provide detailed recommendations for post-treatment surveillance and treatment decisions, which should be based on pathologic staging, patient performance status, and evidence-based therapies 3
- For patients with metastatic disease, various chemotherapy regimens are recommended based on performance status and previous treatments, as per NCCN guidelines 4
- The American Family Physician recommends regular follow-up visits and CEA testing for colon cancer patients 2
Patient Care and Recommendations
- The NCCN recommends that treatment decisions for colon cancer patients should be based on pathologic staging, patient performance status, and evidence-based therapies 3
- Patients should adhere to established surveillance protocols, including regular follow-up visits, CEA testing, and colonoscopy, as recommended by their oncologist 1, 2
- Patients should discuss all supplements and complementary therapies with their oncologist before use, as recommended by the British Journal of Cancer 6
- Patients should focus on evidence-based approaches for recovery, including proper nutrition, physical activity, and management of treatment-related side effects, as recommended by the NCCN 7
