Mechanism of Action of Methylprednisolone in CIDP

Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms

  • Methylprednisolone inhibits cytokine synthesis, including pro-inflammatory mediators that drive the autoimmune attack on peripheral nerve myelin, suppresses prostaglandin and leukotriene production, and blocks leukocyte migration to sites of nerve inflammation, preventing immune cell infiltration into peripheral nerves 1

Important Safety Considerations

  • The American Academy of Neurology and other guideline societies acknowledge sleep disturbances, adrenal suppression, and infection risk as recognized complications of methylprednisolone treatment 2
  • Muscle-related effects of methylprednisolone include loss of muscle mass, type 2 fiber atrophy, and potential for acute myopathy with high doses, as noted by the American College of Rheumatology 3
