Concurrent Administration of Rotavirus and Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines

Guideline Recommendation

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that rotavirus vaccine may be given concurrently with pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) during the same clinical visit. 1

Vaccine Series and Dosing Schedules

Rotavirus Vaccine

  • RotaTeq (RV5) – a 3‑dose oral series administered at ages 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months. 2
  • Rotarix (RV1) – a 2‑dose oral series administered at ages 2 months and 4 months. 2

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (Prevnar)

  • The first dose of PCV is typically given at 2 months of age. [2][4]
  • Subsequent PCV doses are given at 4 months, with an additional 6‑month dose when the infant follows the RotaTeq schedule. 2

Timing Considerations for Rotavirus Vaccine

  • The first rotavirus dose must be administered between 6 weeks and 14 weeks + 6 days of age. [2][4]
  • A minimum interval of 4 weeks is required between successive rotavirus doses. 2
  • All rotavirus doses must be completed by 8 months + 0 days of age. [2][4]

Practical Implementation

  • Administer both rotavirus (oral) and PCV (intramuscular) vaccines at the same visit when the infant meets the age eligibility criteria, using separate anatomical sites for each vaccine. [2][4]
  • Do not postpone rotavirus vaccination to a later visit solely to separate it from PCV, as this can cause the infant to exceed the upper age limit for the first rotavirus dose (>14 weeks + 6 days). [1][3]
