Hematological Changes in Dengue

Fases de la enfermedad del dengue y cambios hematológicos asociados

  • The World Health Organization recommends monitoring hematocrit levels during the critical phase of dengue, as it begins to rise due to plasma leakage, while leukocytes increase during the recovery phase 1, 2
  • During the febrile phase, patients are typically viremic for approximately 3 days, and the RNA of the dengue virus can be detected in serum from approximately 2 days before to 1 week after the onset of illness 2, 3, 4

Importancia clínica de los cambios hematológicos

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that an increase in hematocrit (hemoconcentration) is a key indicator of plasma leakage and a criterion for identifying dengue hemorrhagic fever 5
  • A ≥20% increase in hematocrit from baseline is considered evidence of significant plasma leakage 5
