Myobloc Administration Guidelines

Mechanism of Action and Storage

  • Myobloc works by inhibiting acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, causing temporary muscle paralysis by specifically cleaving the synaptic Vesicle Associated Membrane Protein (VAMP, also known as synaptobrevin), which is essential for acetylcholine release 1

Administration Precautions

  • Healthcare providers should have epinephrine and antihistamine treatments available for all patients receiving Myobloc treatment, and ensure caregivers capable of identifying and responding to anaphylaxis observe patients during administration, as the risk of anaphylaxis is <2% 2, 1

Handling and Storage

  • Myobloc must be stored under specific conditions to maintain its efficacy, including refrigeration at 2°C to 8°C (36°F-46°F), kept in the original carton to protect from light, and not frozen or shaken 1
