Facial Resurfacing Laser Treatment in Patients with Vitiligo

Pre-Treatment Evaluation

  • Disease stability should be confirmed with no new lesions or extension of existing vitiligo patches for at least 12 months, as recommended by the British Association of Dermatologists 1, 2
  • The British Association of Dermatologists notes that surgical treatments are only contraindicated when there are new lesions, active Koebner phenomenon, or disease extension in the previous 12 months 1

Treatment and Monitoring

  • The treatment can proceed with standard precautions if the vitiligo has been stable for over 12 months with no new patches, according to the British Association of Dermatologists 1, 2
  • Post-treatment monitoring should include avoiding all trauma to facial skin during healing to prevent triggering the Koebner phenomenon, applying adequate lubrication to reduce friction-related trauma, and monitoring for any new depigmented patches in the treated area over subsequent months 2
