Administering Oral Medications on an Empty Stomach

Medication Administration Guidelines

  • Oral semaglutide should be taken at least 30 minutes before the first meal of the day with no more than 4 ounces of plain water 1, 2
  • The American Diabetes Association, as reported in Diabetes Care, recommends taking oral semaglutide on an empty stomach to ensure optimal absorption 1
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide delay gastric emptying, which may affect the absorption of other medications 2
  • Semaglutide can cause gastrointestinal side effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and esophageal reflux 1, 4

Special Considerations for Medication Administration

  • If doses of oral semaglutide are missed, clinical judgment is required for subsequent dosing based on previous tolerance and side effects 3
