Echinostomiasis Diagnosis and Management
Morphological Differentiation
- Heterophyiasis can be distinguished from echinostomiasis by the smaller size of the worms (1-2mm length) and the lack of a circumoral collar of spines, with eggs measuring 26-30 µm × 15-17 µm, according to the Journal of Infection 1
Treatment Protocol
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends praziquantel as a highly effective treatment against echinostome infections, with a standard dosing of 40-60 mg/kg in divided doses, as stated in the Journal of Infection 1, 2
Diagnostic Confirmation
- The Infectious Diseases Society of America suggests that three consecutive stool examinations for ova and parasite (O&P) with permanent stained smears should be performed to confirm diagnosis and assess treatment response, as recommended in Clinical Infectious Diseases 3, 4
