Cardiovascular and Central Nervous System Effects of Adderall XR

Patient Monitoring and Management

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics and other medical societies recommend regular monitoring of blood pressure and pulse, especially during initial titration and dose adjustments, to minimize cardiovascular effects in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions 1
  • Weight should be monitored at each visit to assess for appetite suppression effects, and systematic evaluation of both therapeutic benefits and side effects should be conducted during treatment 2
  • Patients with cardiovascular disease may be at higher risk for adverse effects and require more careful monitoring, according to the American Heart Association 1
  • Morning administration of medication is recommended to minimize sleep disturbances, and dose reduction should be considered if insomnia is problematic 2
  • Regular monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate, with dose adjustment or medication change if significant elevations occur, is essential to manage cardiovascular effects 1

Special Populations

  • Older adults may be more sensitive to both therapeutic and adverse effects due to age-related changes in pharmacokinetics, and should be monitored closely 2

Dose Administration

  • Starting at too high a dose can lead to unnecessary side effects and decreased medication adherence, and the maximum recommended dose should not be exceeded 2, 3
