Symptoms and Diagnosis of Reactive Gastropathy

Clinical Presentation

  • The American Gastroenterological Association notes that reactive gastropathy presents with persistent, severe nausea as the most prominent symptom, in contrast to its typical mild and intermittent epigastric discomfort or pain 1
  • Patients with reactive gastropathy may experience symptoms worsening specifically with solid, high-fat, or high-fiber foods, according to the American Gastroenterological Association 3
  • The American College of Gastroenterology recommends treating reactive gastropathy symptomatically, similar to functional dyspepsia if symptoms are present, with a treatment approach that includes proton pump inhibitors to reduce acid-mediated injury 2, 3

Critical Distinction from Gastroparesis

  • The American Gastroenterological Association distinguishes reactive gastropathy from gastroparesis, which presents with severe, persistent vomiting and early satiety, in contrast to reactive gastropathy's mild and intermittent symptoms 1, 2
