Safest Oral Muscle Relaxant to Use with Amiodarone

Understanding Amiodarone's Pharmacological Profile

  • Amiodarone is primarily used for ventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation, with loading doses of 800-1600 mg/day followed by maintenance doses of 200-400 mg/day, according to the American Heart Association 1
  • Amiodarone is associated with significant side effects including QT prolongation, torsades de pointes (rare), hypotension, bradycardia, GI upset, and constipation, as reported by the American College of Cardiology 2, 3
  • The American College of Cardiology recommends considering reducing amiodarone to the lowest effective maintenance dose (200 mg daily if possible) during muscle relaxant therapy, to minimize potential drug interactions 1
  • Patients on amiodarone should be monitored for signs of cardiac conduction abnormalities, such as QT interval prolongation, when initiating muscle relaxant therapy, as advised by the American Heart Association 2, 3
