Clinical Significance of Menarche Timing

  • Early menarche (before age 12 years) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension and metabolic abnormalities in adulthood, according to the American Heart Association 1
  • Both early and late menarche have been associated with hypertension and other cardiometabolic risk factors leading to greater cardiovascular disease risk, as reported by the American Heart Association 1
  • Girls who have not achieved Tanner stage 2 breast development by age 13 years or who fail to progress in pubertal stage for ≥12 months require evaluation for pubertal delay, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics 2
