Post-Accutane Follow-up Guidelines

Patient Monitoring and Follow-up

  • Up to 78% of patients experience mucocutaneous side effects, such as cheilitis or xerosis, during treatment, which may persist after treatment cessation 1
  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that women of childbearing age maintain contraception for 3 years after treatment cessation, or 2 years according to European guidelines 2, 3

Special Considerations

  • Women of childbearing age should not donate blood for at least 1 year after treatment cessation, as recommended by the British Journal of Dermatology 2, 3
  • Long-term bone effects of isotretinoin are not well established, but routine radiological surveillance is not recommended 2, 3
