Surgical Indications for Partial Rotator Cuff Tears
Critical Symptom Requirements
- Significant pain is present, which is the primary indication for any rotator cuff surgery, as recommended by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 1, 2
- Asymptomatic tears should never be operated on, regardless of tear size, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 1, 3
Conservative Management Prerequisites
- Before considering surgery, ensure adequate trial of NSAIDs and acetaminophen for pain control, as well as physical therapy and activity modification, as suggested by clinical guidelines 4, 5
- A single corticosteroid injection with local anesthetic can provide short-term improvement, but multiple injections should be avoided to prevent compromising rotator cuff integrity, as advised by clinical guidelines 4, 6
