Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections in Patients with Bacterial Vaginosis

Introduction to Treatment

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends continuing the metronidazole regimen for bacterial vaginosis (typically 500 mg twice daily for 7 days) while simultaneously initiating standard UTI therapy with agents like nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or a fluoroquinolone based on local antibiograms 1, 2, 3

Patient Counseling

  • Patients must avoid all alcohol during metronidazole treatment and for 24 hours after completion to prevent disulfiram-like reactions (flushing, nausea, vomiting, headache), as advised by the CDC 1, 2, 4, 5
