Optimal Tourniquet Removal Timing

Introduction to Tourniquet Removal

  • The American Journal of Kidney Diseases recommends removing the tourniquet immediately after the needle is inserted into the vein and blood flashback is observed, before starting the blood collection procedure 1, 2

Tempistica Ottimale di Rimozione

  • The National Kidney Foundation suggests that the tourniquet should be removed as soon as the needle is correctly positioned in the vein, following a specific procedural sequence 1, 2
  • Applying the tourniquet to the arm, disinfecting the puncture site, and inserting the needle at a 25-degree angle are all part of the procedural sequence 1, 2, 3
  • When blood flashback is observed, the needle angle should be flattened parallel to the skin and advanced slowly 1, 2
  • The tourniquet should be removed immediately when the needle is in the vessel 1, 2

Considerations for Vascular Access

  • A vein that is only visible with the tourniquet applied indicates underdeveloped vascular access 1, 2, 3
  • In such cases, the vein may require more time to mature, and re-evaluation by the vascular team is necessary 1, 3
  • The tourniquet should only be used to facilitate initial vessel identification and should be removed immediately when the needle is in the vessel 1, 2
  • A vascular access that only functions with the tourniquet applied is inadequate and requires evaluation 1, 3
