HPV Vaccination Schedule and Administration

Age-Based Dosing Schedule

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a 2-dose schedule for individuals who initiate vaccination before age 15, with the second dose given 6-12 months after the first dose 3
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a 3-dose schedule for individuals who initiate vaccination at age 15 or older, with doses at 0, 1-2, and 6 months 3

Minimum Acceptable Intervals

  • The minimum interval between doses 1 and 2 is 4 weeks 2
  • The minimum interval between doses 2 and 3 (for 3-dose schedule) is 12 weeks 3

Vaccine Administration and Considerations

  • The vaccine series should never be restarted if interrupted; continue from where you left off, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics 3
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest that syncope precaution should be taken, having the patient sit or lie down for 15 minutes after vaccine administration, as syncope can occur in adolescents following injections 1, 2
  • Delaying vaccination is inappropriate once minimum intervals are met, as approximately 24% of adolescents report sexual intercourse by 9th grade, emphasizing the urgency of timely completion, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics 3
