Monitoring BMP in CKD Patients After Initiating Furosemide

Initial Monitoring Timeline

  • The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines provide a framework for monitoring, suggesting checks within 2-4 weeks of initiation, with timing dependent on baseline kidney function and potassium levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Subsequent Monitoring Schedule

  • After the initial check, if labs are stable, recheck at 1 month, then 3 months, then every 6 months if kidney function and electrolytes remain stable, according to the Kidney International guidelines 5
  • For patients with eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m², monitor every 1-3 months due to higher risk of complications, as recommended by the Kidney International guidelines 5
  • After any dose increase, restart the monitoring cycle with labs at 2-4 weeks, as suggested by the Kidney International guidelines 5
