CoQ10 Dosage and Administration for Migraine Prevention

  • The American College of Cardiology is not mentioned, however, a standard dose of 100-200 mg/day appears optimal for most patients, following a U-shaped dose-response curve 2, 3
  • Take CoQ10 with a fat-containing meal to enhance absorption, as it is highly lipophilic with naturally low intestinal absorption 1, 4

Safety Profile and Monitoring

  • CoQ10 has an excellent safety profile, with doses up to 3,000 mg/day for 8 months being well-tolerated in neurological conditions, and minimal side effects, including possible mild gastrointestinal symptoms and elevated liver enzymes 3, 4
  • Monitor liver enzymes during long-term supplementation, especially at higher doses 1, 4

Critical Drug Interactions

  • CoQ10 may interact with warfarin, potentially interfering with anticoagulation targets, and increase INR monitoring frequency if patient is on warfarin 1, 3, 5

Treatment Duration and Expected Response

  • A minimum duration of 3 months is required to assess full therapeutic benefit, with benefits continuing to increase with longer duration of treatment 1, 3, 4
