Marijuana Clearance from the Body

Factors Affecting Marijuana Clearance

  • The American College of Cardiology is not applicable here, however, the frequency of use, amount consumed, and potency of cannabis product significantly affect the clearance time of marijuana from the body, with higher doses and potency taking longer to clear 1, 2, 3
  • The average THC concentration in cannabis products has nearly doubled from 9% in 2008 to 17% in 2017, and some concentrates may contain up to 70% THC, leading to longer clearance times 3, 4

Timeline for Marijuana Clearance

  • For occasional users, THC and metabolites typically clear within 3-14 days 1
  • For heavy users, complete clearance may take up to 6 months, with withdrawal symptoms typically occurring within 3 days after cessation and lasting up to 2 weeks 1

Withdrawal Symptoms During Clearance

  • Cannabis withdrawal syndrome is recognized and typically occurs with abrupt cessation after prolonged or heavy use, with symptoms including irritability, anxiety, and restlessness 1
  • Symptoms typically begin within 24-72 hours after last use and most resolve within 1-2 weeks 1, 5

Clinical Implications

  • Cannabis cessation is the primary treatment for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, with resolution typically occurring after a period of abstinence from cannabis use for at least 6 months 6, 7
  • Individuals should avoid driving during the clearance period, as cannabis users have twice the risk of motor vehicle crashes, and waiting 5-8 hours after cannabis use before driving is recommended for most people 5, 8, 9
