Maximum Dosage of Seroflo
Dosing Guidelines
- The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends a maximum daily dosage of 1000 mcg of fluticasone propionate (500 mcg twice daily) with 100 mcg of salmeterol (50 mcg twice daily) for adults 1, 2
- For adults and adolescents (≥12 years), the maximum recommended fluticasone propionate dosage is 500 mcg twice daily (1000 mcg total daily dose) 1, 2
- For adults and adolescents (≥12 years), the maximum recommended salmeterol dosage is 50 mcg twice daily (100 mcg total daily dose) 1, 2
- In children (4-11 years), the recommended fluticasone propionate dosage is 100-250 mcg twice daily (200-500 mcg total daily dose) 1, 2
- In children (4-11 years), the recommended salmeterol dosage is 50 mcg twice daily (100 mcg total daily dose) 1, 2
Dosing Considerations and Cautions
- Higher doses of fluticasone propionate (>1000 mcg/day) are associated with increased risk of systemic side effects, including bone loss, adrenal suppression, osteoporosis, skin thinning, and bruising 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
- In children, suppression of growth velocity has been observed with inhaled corticosteroids, though this effect may be transient 1, 2
Administration Recommendations
- Proper inhaler technique is essential to ensure optimal drug delivery 1, 2
- Using a spacer or valved holding chamber with non-breath-actuated MDIs can decrease local side effects 1, 2
- Mouth washing and spitting after inhalation can reduce the risk of oral thrush (candidiasis) 1, 2
Common Side Effects
- Local effects of Seroflo include pharyngitis, oral thrush (candidiasis), dysphonia, and cough 1, 2
- Potential systemic effects at high doses include adrenal suppression, decreased bone mineral density, and growth suppression in children 1, 2
- Salmeterol-related effects include tachycardia, skeletal muscle tremor, and headache 1, 2
