Anterior Fontanelle Size and Concerning Signs in Infants

Concerning Signs and Evaluation

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends further evaluation if an infant presents with rapidly increasing head circumference, full or bulging fontanelle, splayed cranial sutures, or associated neurological symptoms such as lethargy, seizures, or developmental delays 1
  • Abnormal head growth patterns, such as those associated with a bulging fontanelle, may indicate increased intracranial pressure and warrant further evaluation 1
