Imaging Recommendations for Olecranon Bursitis

Initial Imaging

  • Radiographs should be obtained first to exclude fracture or other bony pathology in patients presenting with suspected olecranon bursitis. The American College of Radiology recommends plain X‑ray as the initial modality. 1, 2, 3

Advanced Imaging

  • Routine use of advanced imaging (MRI, CT, or ultrasound) is not indicated for the standard evaluation of olecranon bursitis. The American College of Radiology advises reserving these modalities for atypical cases or when complications are suspected. 1, 2, 4
