RotaTeq Administration Schedule

Dosing Schedule

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends administering RotaTeq as a 3-dose oral series at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, with the first dose given between 6 weeks and 14 weeks 6 days of age, and all doses completed by 8 months of age 1, 2
  • The standard timing for the doses is: Dose 1 at 2 months, Dose 2 at 4 months, and Dose 3 at 6 months of age 1, 2, 3

Critical Age Restrictions

  • The minimum age for the first dose is 6 weeks, and the maximum age for the first dose is 14 weeks, 6 days, after which the infant becomes permanently ineligible 1, 2, 4
  • The maximum age for the final dose is 8 months, 0 days, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics 1, 2, 3
  • The minimum interval between doses is 4 weeks 1, 2, 3

Co-administration with Other Vaccines

  • RotaTeq may be given simultaneously with all routine infant vaccines, including DTaP, Hib, IPV, hepatitis B, and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics 1, 3
  • For infants ≥6 months, RotaTeq can be co-administered with inactivated influenza vaccine 3

Special Populations

  • Preterm infants should be vaccinated using chronological age, not corrected gestational age, and should follow the same schedule as term infants if clinically stable 6, 7
  • If a preterm infant is still hospitalized in the NICU at 2 months, consider waiting until discharge to avoid theoretical transmission risk, but do not delay beyond 14 weeks, 6 days 7

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Do not start the series in infants ≥15 weeks old, as they have aged out of eligibility permanently 1, 4
  • Do not use corrected age for preterm infants, always use chronological age from birth 6, 7
