Cystocele Management

Evaluation and Diagnosis

  • A proper evaluation is essential before initiating treatment, including physical examination to determine the grade of cystocele and presence of other pelvic floor disorders, assessment of symptoms, urinalysis and urine culture to exclude other urinary disorders, according to the American Urological Association 1
  • Imaging studies such as transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) for anatomic and functional evaluation and MR defecography for comprehensive assessment of all pelvic compartments may be considered in complex cases, as recommended by the American College of Radiology 2

Surgical Management

  • Sacrocolpopexy is often performed in conjunction with other gynecologic procedures and is particularly useful when cystocele is associated with apical prolapse, according to the American Gastroenterological Association 3
