Cymbalta-Induced Dry Eye Syndrome

Pathophysiology and Risk Factors

  • Dry eye syndrome causes an unstable tear film that results in poor maintenance of the ocular surface, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • This tear film instability leads to fluctuating vision and ocular irritation symptoms, as reported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 2
  • The compromised tear film fails to provide adequate lubrication to the corneal surface, resulting in corneal epithelial damage that manifests as cloudy or blurred vision, as stated by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 3
  • Environmental factors such as low humidity, air conditioning, and increased screen time can worsen medication-induced dry eye, as noted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 3

Management and Treatment

  • Use of artificial tears/ocular lubricants is recommended to manage dry eye symptoms, as suggested by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 4
  • Implementation of environmental modifications, such as humidifiers, reduced screen time, and avoiding direct air flow to eyes, can help alleviate dry eye symptoms, as recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 3
  • Consideration of punctal occlusion or other tear conservation approaches may be necessary for more severe cases, as advised by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 5

Evaluation and Follow-up

  • Consultation with an ophthalmologist is recommended if patients experience moderate or severe eye pain, as advised by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 5
  • Lack of response to over-the-counter lubricating eye drops, progressive worsening of vision, or symptoms that significantly impact quality of life warrant ophthalmological evaluation, as stated by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 5 and 3
