Sore Throat Treatment Guidelines
Appropriate Treatment Options
- The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases recommends either ibuprofen or paracetamol as first-line treatments for relief of acute sore throat symptoms in adults and children 1, 2, 3
- These medications have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing acute sore throat symptoms, with no significant difference between ibuprofen and paracetamol in analgesic efficacy or safety for short-term treatment 4
Treatment Algorithm
- The treatment algorithm for sore throat and mouth pain starts with oral analgesics, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, following recommended dosing guidelines 1, 2, 4
- For severe cases in adults, corticosteroids may be considered in conjunction with antibiotic therapy, although no evidence of significant benefit has been found for corticosteroids in children 1, 5, 6
Important Cautions
- Zinc gluconate is not recommended for the treatment of sore throat, despite some use in common cold symptoms, according to the Clinical Microbiology and Infection guidelines 1, 2
- Complementary treatments such as herbal remedies and acupuncture have inconsistent evidence and are not recommended as primary treatment by the Clinical Microbiology and Infection society 1, 7
- When treating children, be particularly cautious with medication selection and dosing, as recommended by the Clinical Microbiology and Infection guidelines 4
