Safety Guidelines for Levobupivacaine and Ropivacaine in Spinal Anesthesia

  • The U.S. FDA specifies a maximum intrathecal dose of 3.0 mg/kg for both levobupivacaine and ropivacaine when used for peripheral nerve blocks. [1][2]

Cardiac Safety Considerations

  • Both levobupivacaine and ropivacaine are cardiac depressants; clinicians should calculate the maximum allowable dose for each patient before administration to avoid systemic cardiac toxicity. [1][2]

Management of Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST)

  • A 20 % lipid emulsion should be immediately available in the operating area for rapid treatment of LAST associated with either levobupivacaine or ropivacaine. [1][2]
