Malaria Prevention in Adults

  • Standard antimalarial prophylaxis options include chloroquine (for chloroquine-sensitive regions), atovaquone-proguanil, or artemisinin-based combinations depending on resistance patterns, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1
  • The World Health Organization advises that if chloroquine is needed for malaria prophylaxis and cholera vaccination (Dukoral) is also indicated, chloroquine should be started ≥10 days after Dukoral vaccination due to reduced immunogenicity when coadministered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2
  • Chloroquine can interfere with antibody response to certain vaccines, including rabies vaccine (HDCV), so timing must be carefully coordinated, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 3
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends careful coordination of chloroquine and rabies vaccine (HDCV) administration to avoid interference with antibody response 4
